how to use your watch to find north

What do you do if your power goes out? Unplug all electrical devices - TV, water heater, computer, etc. It is important to ensure that all smoke and carbon Monoxide detectors work and that the batteries remain fully charged. Review your family's emergency plans. Other charging options such as solar, auto and crank chargers are available. Check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions if you own a generator and learn how to operate it safely.

Unplug appliances

Unplugging your expensive electronics is one way to prevent power outages. Even if their electronics aren't extremely power-hungry or sensitive to surges of power, they should be unplugged. You can also protect your electronic devices with surge suppressors. You should also remember to keep your fridge closed! While you might get the power back on quickly, you should not eat anything.

Unplug the water heater

If your water heater is not working properly, unplug it. Although it sounds simple, it could endanger your water heater. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to solve this problem. The first is to turn off the power to the unit. Although it may seem difficult, this will prevent any further damage or danger. To find out more about how to unplug your water heater when electricity goes out, continue reading.

Unplug computers

Common misconception is that computers will run more efficiently if they are unplugged when the electricity goes out. It is not true that unplugging your laptop will save energy. However, it protects your computer from power surges that can cause damage to your computer. Turn off the surge suppressor before you attempt to unplug your computer if there is no electricity.

Unplug TV

Avoid watching TV if the power goes out. This is a huge mistake that you can make. There are many good reasons to keep your TV on during the evening, but there are also some times when unplugging your television is the safest option. Modern electrical circuit boards have protection devices that automatically trip the electricity if there is danger. You can also check the fuses inside your TV plug to make sure it's still functioning.

Air conditioners that are not plugged

If the power outage is not short-lived, unplug your air conditioner. If your AC unit is left unplugged, it can cause irreparable damage. The capacitor, which controls the motor's speed, can only handle a specific amount of power. If it is not, the circuit breaker will trip and cause the capacitor to burn out. Overloading the capacitor can damage the AC, which can cause the system to malfunction. Unplugging your air conditioner before the power goes out can also protect your electrical system from a power surge.

How to Navigate with or Without a Compass

A compass is not able to tell you where your destination is, but it can help guide you back home if necessary.

There are three methods you can use to navigate.

  1. By landmarks
  2. Use a compass to find magnetic North
  3. By stars

You recognize landmarks when you see them. They can include buildings, trees, rivers, and others. They are useful as they can be used to show you where you are.

Magnetic North is simply the direction in which the Earth's magnetic field points. If you look up at a skyline, you will notice that the sun seems to be moving across it. The earth's magnetic field actually causes sun to move around. The sun appears to move across the sky but it actually moves around the horizon. At noon, the sun is directly overhead. The sun is directly beneath you at midnight. Because the earth's magnetic field changes constantly, the exact direction of its magnetic North pole is always changing. This could mean you can be off-course by quite a bit in one day.

Stars are another method for navigating. The stars appear to rise or set above the horizon. These are points in space you can use to find your exact location relative to other locations.
